An Irvine salon owner still shines after a stunning victory at a national beauty awards show.
Michelle Nixon, owner of Coco M in East Road, has won Hair and Beauty Salon of the Year at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards.
Not only did the downtown beauty salon win its regional division, but it triumphed in its overall category.
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Michelle said: “We won the South West category and then we won the overall winner for Scotland.
“It’s so important to us and we’re thrilled to bring the award back to Irvine.”
Self-taught nail technician Michelle first opened Coco M six years ago in April after being laid off.

The mum-of-one from Kilwinning said: “I’ve always loved doing my nails, even as a teenager, and over the years I’ve done nails and eyelashes as a hobby, but after being fired, I decided to give it a try at turning my hobby into my full-time job.
“I started by renting a few places and it became my own living room.
“Now my dreams have grown thanks to my fantastic team of five women who have helped make Coco M the best salon in Scotland. I am so grateful to Christine Rae, who loves all things hair and is with me since the show opened., Lorna Nixon, Ashley Gorman, Stephanie Agnew and our newest team member Dani Carbray.
“We have such a bubbly and friendly team and we all love our work and are so grateful to have won this award – especially after a tough few years. It’s not something we thought would ever happen to us, a small living room at Irvine.
“We can’t thank our customers enough, we truly have the most amazing customers.”
The awards were supposed to be in December but Covid put a stop to the glamorous evening.
Michelle, 36, opened up about her quirky business background.
“The name of the salon is a bit of a funny story,” she explained, “I always wanted my own salon but with a unique name.
“During my honeymoon with my husband in Thailand, we spent a lot of time soaking up the sun at our favorite beach called Coco Tams, so I decided the name should be Coco M. The M representing Michelle and the Coco would remind me of our incredible honeymoon.
“I have to thank my husband Kevin for everything about the show as he always believed in me and was the driving force behind me.”
