Business is booming at Kiss and Makeup, a new beauty salon in Perham – Perham Focus

PERHAM – Dreams come true for new Perham business owner Sheila Overland, who recently opened beauty salon Kiss and Makeup.

The salon opened in December in the Harmonious Architecture loft at 107 West Main Street.

“I grew up doing people’s makeup for weddings and stuff like that, just for fun,” Overland recalled, “And I finally decided to try it for a career. I was in human resources before that, and although I loved what I was doing, it wasn’t my passion.”

Wanting to follow her true passion, Overland decided to get an eyelash extension license in 2019. She also wanted to do bridal makeup, so she pursued her license as an esthetician. During this process, she discovered another passion: skincare.

“I have found my place in life,” she said. “I really like this industry. I feel like it’s a perfect fit for me.”

Overland began working at Studio M in Perham, specializing in eyelash extensions, skincare, makeup and more. Opening her own studio has always been part of her longer-term plan, and in 2021, she said, things are falling into place for her to do so.

Clients who receive eyelash extensions, facials, brows, and other skin-related services sit here when they visit Kiss and Makeup.

She was taking classes at B Still Yoga — which was once located in the Harmonious Architecture loft — and couldn’t stop thinking about how beautiful this loft space was. She walked towards the class with enthusiasm at the idea of being in this environment.

“At the end of the yoga class, they said, ‘Well, we’re going to stay here until the end of December, and then we’ll be in our new space,'” Overland recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh no, what am I going to do? I love this space! I want to do yoga here every day.’ And then I got to thinking… ‘Actually, I should check to see who’s going to be in this space.'”

While the former yoga space was already booked, Overland discovered that Suite 4, the space Kiss and Makeup would soon call home, was set to open in December. She jumped at the chance. She chose the name Kiss and Makeup because she liked puns.

Since then, his business has taken off. For the past few months, she’s been offering skincare plans, brow care, eyelash extensions, facials, spray tan and more. On April 1, she added nail technician Sindy Becerra to her team, to provide additional services.

While Becerra was a little nervous when she started out, she said she fell in love with the beauty industry.

“It was fun,” she said. “It’s something new, but it’s something exciting. And I really like being here.”

Becerra does all types of nail art, from gels to acrylics to pedicures, and she also hopes to learn how to do eyelash extensions soon. Overland hopes to teach Becerra herself, once she gets her instructor license, which she is in the process of getting. In the future, she would like to start her own eyelash school.

“It’s in the five-year plan for me to start the eyelash school, but we’ll see what happens,” she said.

Kiss and Makeup offers a full range of nail services by Sindy Becerra.

Other plans for the future include working with Jaime Kopveiler, of Overflow Creative, a graphic design firm also located in the loft, to create a confidence camp for young girls. The camp would bring girls and their mothers together to teach them about skin care, self-confidence and more.

“We feel really lucky to be able to be part of this community,” Overland said. “And I’m really impressed with how everyone is so united.”
