Adventure group brings yoga poses back to local trails

“We love to hike, we love to go out, but we really try to enjoy the trip”

After a period where they were only online, forced by the pandemic, members of a local outdoor adventure group meet again in person to strike a pose on local trails.

“Members are constantly commenting on how great it is to be in person again,” said Rhonda McMahon, owner of Stride and Stretch. “The ability to connect in person has such a phenomenal impact on everyone’s mental health, it’s so much better to be back with our community of friends.”

The group of members, which met twice a week before the pandemic, hiked different trails through Guelph and surrounding areas while incorporating yoga poses. Last year, due to COVID restrictions, members gathered in limited numbers to do loop hikes in places still open to hiking.

“We missed those trails because back then there was a limit to where we could go, depending on closures and the like, so it’s really exciting to get back to our regular trails,” said McMahon said.

As the members are reunited again, McMahon mentions that there are certain safety protocols that she keeps in place, including that each member should be double vaccinated.

“It’s a private group, so if that’s not your thing, you don’t have to join us,” McMahon said. “We want to be as inclusive as possible, but we also want to be mindful of the safety of all of our members. ”

In addition to focusing on reconnecting, there is a new concern for “consciousness” within the group as they become familiar with the indigenous peoples and the history of the trails they walk on.

“We love to hike, we love to go out, but we really try to enjoy the trip,” McMahon said. “It’s great to hike the Bruce Trail to cross over and have a good hike, but I want my group, and my group has been receptive to it, to learn more about the land, conservation of the land and what we need to do. to protect it.

“For my part, I think it gives us a much better ethic, in the sense that we are guests in nature and we have to protect it. We are guests on these indigenous lands that go back a long way and we are guests on the trails that people work to maintain.
